One Word Film

Good evening, this past week me and my friend G. worked on a video editing project. We were assigned a word to portray in a short film using only sound, editing techniques and camera angles. The word we were given was "Envy," and so we were directed to use a brainstorming sheet, storyboards for each scene, to simplify how we were going to develop the story in order for it to be understood in order to leave an impact on the viewer. The short film would be no longer than a minute and a half, using either Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe Express to edit our film.

We began to plan out our story using our brainstorming sheet, we settled on Character A looking forward to social interaction only to realize that nobody was there to talk to him. On the other hand, character B is surrounded by a group of friends as they socialize. Character A sees this and storms off in an envious sentiment towards Character B.

As for the storyboard, we focused on trying to make a seamless interpretation of the whole film, this meant including various shots and angles of both Characters A and B to give a necessary amount of context to the viewer. This meant establishing each scene, with a description of the setting, camera angle, how the camera angle chains together with other scenes, and finally how the scene will develop the story. We used a variety of shots such as long shots, mid shots, close up shots, cutaway shots, among others.

When filming we made sure to film a copious number of shots for each scene, so we had options to choose from in case the first shots weren't satisfactory. We did a couple of on-the-spot changes to the original storyboard in order to fit the circumstances of filming better. To edit, we used Adobe Premiere Pro, and it worked rather well for us, it was easy to incorporate scenes where we wanted them. I believe we had good communication and utilization of time when making the project considering the inclement weather. While we could have filmed a couple more scenes towards the end to really convey the popularity of Character B in contrast to Character A, I believe for our inexperience in filming thus far it was satisfactory.
